Fall 2016 NYFW Street Style…

The street style at New York Fashion Week is my absolute favorite part of the entire fashion frenzy. I love seeing the outfits other icons, fashion lovers and your average people just like us, put together for themselves to cascade the beautiful streets of New York City during the most fashionable time of year. Here are some of my favorite looks from the week…

Creatively Being You Through Style…

It’s beautiful to see kids in their creative, imaginative state of mind, as they throw themselves around the floor pretending to be mermaids and superheroes. It’s just a carpet and a couch, but to them it’s another world and I instantly have flashbacks of how I played just the same as a child. I remember it being so real. I’d flap my mermaid tail in the pool and in those moments it would actually look like the ocean and the sharks would be coming for me; I could feel their pressure and the fear building up inside my chest. How amazingly is the imagination? It’s the magical getaway that I can now as an adult only experience when I go to sleep at night. Luckily for me, I dream nearly every single night and they’re always widely vivid and interesting, but to remember how as a kid you could transform your entire world into a faraway land and actually believe it and see it, is something I wish I could hold onto forever.

Of course it’s the imaginative types that are always claimed to be weird and strange as teens and adults. Like my old neighbor, who’s 16 and runs around his yard alone fighting Jedi’s with his light saber. Don’t get me wrong it can be a bit comical and strange, especially to other high-schoolers who leave their imaginations to gather dust in boxes in their attics; Yet he has so much more than many of us with his ability to use his imagination so vividly. Those are the creators. Unfortunately, at that age it’s all about being what’s “cool” and “popular”, not quirky and different.

I would sit in boring classes in high school and try to force myself to daydream. I wanted to feel the escape of a magical place with magical people and transport myself to my own fairy tale. But as I said, force. Sometimes out of the blue it would just happen, but when it disappeared I always wanted it back and could never reach it. I wanted that imaginative escape. Like those moments in the early mornings where you’re consciously asleep and can control the avenues of your dreams, those are beautiful, extraordinary moments.  I wanted the feeling of creativity.

I bring this up because creativity and the imagination has a lot to do with personal style, and overall being your own unique person. A creative mind has creative style. Style is how you express yourself. And if you’re just buying what everyone else has then are you expressing you?

In high school I wanted my creative genius to flow but it disappeared with tight pencil skirts and Victoria’s Secret sweatpants. I wanted me but I wanted to be “cool”, and I feel as though this is a mass consensus for high schoolers. Fortunately for me I am a creative person, even though many times in the past I have dampened it down. I found creativity in changing my hairstyle. It was an expressive freedom for me; there was no “cool” hairstyle. I love change and experimenting and I always did that with bold drastic cuts that got me called names like “alien space invader” and “helmet head”. Teenagers are always the prime suspects of criticism from their peers, and that’s the exact struggle with expressing yourself and growing into who you really are. Everyone always has something to say about everyone who’s just a little bit different.

I will always remember the best (back handed) compliment I ever received and of course it was in high school, “you wear the ugliest clothes but they look so good on you!” That’s exactly what I’ve always wanted and everything I believed, and still do, about my sense of style. And even now, because of my strange taste, I often don’t follow my first instinct. I care what my boyfriend will think of it, or what my family would say etc. Then I later regret not following my true desires and letting myself care what everyone else will think.

We grow up being pressured for approval and learn that acceptance should be the goal and therefore we try to be like everyone else, to act and dress like the media tells us to (just look at the mid length Kim K bodycon phase!). Even now with a fashion blog, the Instagram pictures I post that are the most basic and cliché, like a cup of Starbucks, get the most attention. I’m stuck somewhere in between wanting to have what’s popular style and wanting that that’s my own and I think that’s the same for many of us growing up in today’s culture. But that’s okay and it’s okay for you too, for everything you’re stuck between choosing and deciding to be in life. Always remember to choose what you want, not what everyone else wants or likes or is telling you to get. And don’t let the opinion of them sway you if they don’t like it. Maybe reevaluate what their opinion is before letting it affect your choice. Your choices, creativity, imagination, and desires are what make you you. Never neglect it.

Kendall Jenner High Waisted Leggings…

Kendall Jenner is the epitome of chic street style… She’s a major inspiration for me and I know for many others. Her effortless street style is to envy! She is definitely known for wearing leggings for her morning strolls and coffee runs and even just errands with friends, and even with such simple outfits she looks amazingly chic! Here below are just some of her cutest comfy street style looks, and where you can find similar and amazing affordable leggings just like hers….

Cozy Days…

Sweater: Urban Outfitters

Tunic: H&M

Leggings: Garage

Boots: Aldo

Sunnies: Forever 21

I know for me, as a nanny, getting up and doing my hair, makeup and the full nine yards isn’t necessary and takes away sleep time for those 530 am wake ups, but I always try to make sure that even when I’m cozy and lounging about for the day, I’m doing it in style! And there’s no better way to do that than some leggings and an oversized knit sweater!

Saturday Street Style…

Hat: Urban Outfitters

Shirt: H&M

Hoodie: Juicy Couture

Jacket: J.Crew

Jeans: Tommy Hilfiger (similar here)

Shoes: Aldo (similar here... on sale!)

Necklace: H&M (similar here)

Black and white is a never ending classic look, and with black jeans a jean jacket is a quick go-to! I love to pair a zip up hoodie sweatshirt like this velvet Juicy Couture one under my jean jackets for an extra bit of warmth and because it always adds that extra bit that just brings everything together. This hat has been one of my favorites for a few years now. Adorable yet chic, Urban Outfitters always has unique accessories! There are a lot of plain neutrals going on here so I thought I’d add in this statement necklace to give the outfit some more edge. One statement piece can change a whole look! I’ve learned in many articles that having good neutral basic pieces in your closet is the best thing you can own, and to buy 5 new statement pieces a season. It couldn’t be more true! I really love the basics collection at H&M; Affordable, comfy and they all fit really well.

Target Beauty Haul/Sonia Kashuk Review…

After recently visiting home and leaving my entire makeup bag there 😦 I decided to do a little necessity run through at Target to hold me over for the time being. Although majority of my feedback is mainly negative, for me I have been using high end products for a few years now, so going backwards with my products really showed me the value of them. Foundation, Concealer, Bronzer, Brows, Brushes, eye liner & macara and a few fun lip colors, this was the result and my opinion on these drug store products.

  1. Foundation – Sonia Kashuk Foundation Stick in shade 14

Luckily I had a beauty blender on hand for this one… Not much coverage, very oily and leaves my skin, even after a 12 hour day, feeling more moist than I would typically want. When applying, each stroke leaves a thick creamy line and you can see all of my pores! (until I blend, of course, but it still freaked me out!) I definitely miss my Urban Decay liquid foundation, or any of my past liquid foundations. If you typically like your liquid, i don’t recommend this at all.

2. Concealer – Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles

Maybelline® Instant Age Rewind® Eraser Dark Circles Concealer + Treatment - Neutralizer

I love the application of this! It’s so easy an smart! The product is lightweight and smooth. The only downfall is that it does crease under the eyes, so a good blending and applying a powder on top can help with that.

3. Bronzer – Sonia Kashuk Loose Powder Bronzer in 47 golden

I may have just picked the wrong color in this case. I feel as though many of the drug store brand bronzer’s I’ve ever used have been too orange-ish and sparkly. What I look for in a bronzer is a natural looking tan color and this was just too bright and had too much shimmer, but could look better if I already had a tan!

4. Brows – NYX Eyebrow Pencil in EP05 Dark Brown

This yet again may have been a color mistake by me. Although it was Dark Brown, it still came out too light for my brows and was highly visible throughout them. I did love that it came with the brush at the end though. It was a great tool for cleaning up and shapng my brows which I do on my own almost daily!

5. Brushes – Sonia Kashuk Limited Edition Bush Couture 5 piece brush set

I’ve read a lot of reviews on these bushes that agree with my opinion of them all together, they’re adorable to look at and mainly only for that! The foundation brush is hard and doesn’t smoothly spread the foundation. The blush/powder brush I do love, although it sheds. I love the size, shape, and density of it and use it for my bronzer every day but picking little brush hairs off my face isn’t too fun. After previously using the small round shaped eyeliner brush that comes with the Maybelline Gel Liner pot (see below), the angled brush in this set was a blessing. I never knew any other liner brush till this and because of the angle brush my winged liner comes out perfect every time. The shadow brush is thick and great for full lid coverage. The crease brush I have yet to use, but it’s thin, frail and too flat and wide for my crease. I have heard many great things about the Sonia Kashuk Single brushes in comparison to the limited edition sets.

6. Eye Liner – Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner

Maybelline® Eye Studio® Lasting Drama™ Gel Eyeliner - Eggplant

This is another one of my go-to favorites. I have always used this eye liner gel and although have not tried many others besides MAC, I have always loved this one too much to change! It’s smooth and creamy so it’s easy to apply and stays the same all day. The only thing I will say about this product is because of the soft, creamy-ness it will smudge.

7. Mascara – Maybelline Colossal

I absolutely love this mascara. I’ve been using it for years and years now and have yet to find one I love more. Although after a long day it does flake a tiny bit, but I have never had the problem where it has been noticeable at all. It gives my lashes length and volume and I never have problems with it clumping unlike what I’ve experienced with many pricier, high end designer mascaras like Dior, Bag Gal Lash, Sephora, and Mac.
